Our vision is that, with the combined efforts of the diverse partners, HPC5 creates the most innovative, creative and powerful network for HPC and cloud computing services in the Slovenia-Italy cross-border region.

Consortium

HPC5 will stimulate, facilitate and sustain a business growth system in technologically oriented vertical niches that will generate employment opportunities, improved living standards, fuel innovation, increase competitiveness and create greater investment opportunities in the region. The network aims to be the catalyst for attracting cutting-edge skills needed to spawn research and innovation in the cross-border region.

Our vision is that, with the combined efforts of the diverse partners, HPC5 creates the most innovative, creative and powerful network for HPC and cloud computing services in the Slovenia-Italy cross-border region.

Today, High Performance Computing (HPC) is an integral component in almost every walk of life, helping researchers gain insight into grand scientific or societal challenges, such as calculations for understanding the nature of matter or analysing the human genome. It has become omnipresent and a key driver of innovation in a variety of industries that require precision and speed, with uses ranging from the structural design of airplanes to risk of default analysis. The European Union has clearly recognized the importance of HPC, with establishment of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking which began its operations in November 2018 and today 29 European countries and the Union are pooling resources to develop an integrated world-class supercomputing and data infrastructure in Europe and to create a highly competitive and innovative European supercomputing ecosystem.

The development of the consortium has been initiated within the support from iCON project under the Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Slovenia-Italy 2007-2013. The founding partners foresaw a great potential for this consortium due to the vibrant industry which currently exists in the cross-border region, with a strong base in High Performance Computing (HPC) and Cloud Computing (CC). The founding and external partners represent leading infrastructure, services and research capabilities in the region. The region also provides strong FIRE (Finance, Insurance, Real Estate) and MUSH (Municipalities, Universities, Schools, Hospitals) market drivers as well as low costs of doing business and a strong labour pool.

What is lacking, however, is a mature regional innovation network with well-developed vertical and horizontal linkages amongst infrastructure and service providers, OEM’s, industry, universities, research institutions and so forth. Development of this innovation network will also require recognition and support from politicians, municipalities and government, as well identification of funding sources.

The initiative will make the Italy-Slovenia cross-border region a leader in the use of HPC and attractive to world-class researchers and businesses looking work with HPC skills and technology. HPC5 is also focused on development of HPC knowledge within the region to ensure the regions continuous growth.

Our vision is that, with the combined efforts of the diverse partners, HPC5 creates the most innovative, creative and powerful network for HPC and cloud computing services in the Slovenia-Italy cross-border region.
